The issues involved in the project

To come up with an LRA (Laser Reflector Array) design offering maximum performances in terms of the reflection of photons, irrespective of the position of the station on the ground both when transmitting and receiving.

The optics and detection centre had the task of providing an optical LRA system solution made up of 9 cube corners, designed in such a way as to optimise the reflection of photons whatever the position of the altimetric station on the ground and, amongst other things, this study included:

  • ASAP modelling of the radiometric performance of the LRA based on the dimensioning of the cube corners (diameters and angles, etc.) and the position of the altimetric station on the ground.
  • ASAP used for the sensitivity of the radiometric performance of the LRA based on any manufacturing defects and thermal gradient.

Results

  • An article authored together with the CNES was published as part of SPIE 2010 in San Diego, under the title of “design and development of the laser retro reflector array (LRA) for SARAL”.
